Ultimately the best advice is not to download files from unknown sites, don’t open emails from unknown addresses and have anti-virus software installed.
If you wish to further combat the threats of being online it is also best understand what is out there. Once you know what you’re up against, you will be able to detect threats in advance (sometimes before your virus checker!) and minimise the damage if worst comes to worst.
